Джонни Акоста родился 21-го июля 1983-го года. Профессиональную карьеру он начинал в клубе "Сантос де Гапилес", в котором провёл шесть лет. Затем на Акосту обратил внимание "Алахуэленсе". В составе этой команды Джонни пять раз становился чемпионом Коста-Рики. В 2016-м году защитник распрощался с "Алахуэленсе" и перешёл в "Эредиано", а через два года Акоста покинул родину, заключив соглашение с колумбийским "Рионегро Агилас".
Акоста дебютировал за сборную Коста-Рики достаточно поздно – в 27 лет. Случилось это в марте 2011-го года в товарищеском поединке против Аргентины.
